Deactivate WordPress Plugins to Troubleshoot 500 Error #WordPress #500 #plugins

Yesterday after updating a plugin on my WordPress site I received a 500 error. This error is basically saying that something is wrong with your website. In my case, I knew that I needed to disable the plugins but I could not get to the WordPress admin panel. I found the answer in the WordPress Codex.

There were two options presented in the FAQ section titled: How to deactivate all plugins when not able to access the administrative menus?  The tip didn’t have screenshots so below are two screenshots to illustrate the two tips.

  1. Use phpMyAdmin to deactivate all plugins
  2. User your host’s file manager, rename the folder “plugins” to “plugins.hold”
